The Tesla Model S will become the future police car of the Los Angeles Police Department as a series of tests on the street had already started this week. This is a part of the police force plan in the US that aims to replace many, if not all traditional cop vehicles to the greener electric vehicles in a span of five years.
It is worth noting that in the past, the police force has some reservations about using the Tesla Model S as it can not be used in the event of a major power outage, it seems that LAPD has reconsidered and decided to take one of the cars donated by Elon Musk for a test.
Tesla Model S P85D
It is the Tesla Model S P85D range that was chosen by the LAPD, according to AutoBlog. It will be equipped with everything necessary to make it a real patrol car as well as cutting-edge infotainment technology. It will then undergo a series of official testing on the street to check if it is ready to bring order and fight evil through the streets of Los Angeles.
The Tesla Model S P85D uses two electric motors that work together to deliver more than 691 hp and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.2 seconds, its electrical range can also go miles. These numbers are mainly the reason while the Model S was chosen by LAPD as the police force is looking for a quick and long range EV for them.
According to Vartan Yegiyan, deputy commander of the Office of Administration of the LAPD, the Model S will be used both in emergencies and in various activities like chasing criminals - it will be the sergeant in patrol, according to The Drive.
Tesla Model S vs BMW i3
Just a few months before, LAPD announced that the BMW I3 is their choice of electric car and they have partnered with BMW to receive 100 BMW I3 that will be used for patrolling. However, the need for a quicker and longer range EV was brought up making the Model S the obvious choice as the Bavarian EV lacks the power.
But that doesn't mean that the BMW i3 is not an effective police car. In fact, the LAPD still plans to add 100 BMW i3 but those will be used for normal circumstances wherein the Tesla Model S is for emergency responses.
